Harm Aantjes, Technical Manager at Wemmers Transport, talks about the CO2 reduction in tanker transport that they managed to achieve together with TBR Solutions.
He shares with us his experiences about the specialist knowledge of TBR Solutions during the project “Tank cleaning installation with water purification”.
What was the situation before, what did you want to achieve, where did you want to get to?
The tankers are cleaned at Wemmers Cleaning with water at a temperature of 85°C. Steam is often added during the process. A lot of energy is required to heat the water. When the water is at the right temperature, the cleaning takes place. As soon as the used water is transported to our water treatment plant after cleaning, the water is still at a high temperature. Our purification plant works less well with hot water. Even after purifying, the water remains hot for a long time. Especially during the summer months we have to deal with waste water with a temperature of approximately 50°C. We felt that things had to be done differently and therefore asked the engineers of TBR Solutions for advice.
Together with TBR Solutions, we discussed the options for reducing the burden on the environment. TBR Solutions helped us calculate the current situation, estimate the possible savings and proposed a solution. The idea is to preheat and reuse the energy in order to reduce our CO2 emissions. If we reuse energy, the water is sent to the treatment plant at a lower temperature. As a result, the treatment works more efficiently and contaminants are better captured. This also reduces the use of chemicals.
At first I called the process wastewater cooling, now I call it heat recovery. With this heat recovery we ensure a significant CO2 reduction of approx. 150 tons per year, we cool the waste water back to approx. 25°C and we use 30% less gas. The installation therefore pays for itself. That’s a win-win situation, isn’t it?
How did the project go and what solution was chosen?

What was it like collaborating with TBR Solutions?
TBR Solutions has extensive knowledge of and experience with the reuse of residual heat and CO2 reduction, in this industry as well as others. We came to the conclusion that they can perfectly apply this knowledge in transport and tanker cleaning. The specialist solutions are easy to apply. TBR Solutions unburdens us.
During the collaboration you have had contact with Marijn, Erwin, Jan and Henk. Did that work well?
Henk and Jan have been on location several times to shape the plan, take measurements and make calculations. Based on this, we determined the installation and discussed the options. There was a lot of consultation, including my preliminary research into installations. Our needs have been carefully listened to, which is why the solution offered is perfectly tailored to our organization.
Marijn took care of the further preparation, made the planning and supplied the right materials. Marijn, together with Erwin, also took care of the installation and the execution of the installation work. Real teamwork.
Because of the direct contact and committed staff, the cooperation with the people of TBR Solutions was very pleasant. Even after delivery, the men of TBR Solutions help with aftercare in the form of monitoring and further adjustment of equipment in order to achieve the most sustainable result possible together. The current state of technology ensures that this is easily possible remotely.
How did the planning of the project go?
We can look back on that with satisfaction. The plan was drawn up in consultation. Various structural adjustments also had to be made in the building. The installation naturally affects our work process. In order to disrupt this process as little as possible, we chose an implementation day in which various activities were combined. As a result, the shutdown of the cleaning process has been kept to a minimum.
Why was this solution chosen?
We have thoroughly studied all possible solutions. We were able to make a broad assessment. We were looking for a specialist and we found it in the form of TBR Solutions. The solution they have calculated is very effective for us. We did not opt for the most economical solution, but for the most effective and reliable installation. In short, the expectations are high, and the first results are certainly promising!
Reducing CO2 footprint
Wemmers continues to strive to protect the environment as efficiently as possible and the new installation will contribute to further reducing the CO2 footprint.
