TBR Solutions helps ICL achieve a CO2 reduction with the economizer
ICL is known worldwide as the largest producer of fertilizers. The partnership between TBR and ICL has existed for at least 30 years. The maintenance and optimization of ICL’s boiler house lies in TBR’s hands.

ICL ensures sufficient harvest yields and thus contributes to food security around the world. ICL has mapped out their long-term vision for achieving a CO2 reduction. Rob Veerman, head of technical planning at ICL, has asked Jaap Reinders at TBR for advice. How can CO2 be minimized during steam production? In addition, we would like to reduce the energy consumption of the steam boilers.

ICL Specialty Fertilizers

ICL is a global leader in plant nutrition. Everything they do is aimed at benefitting one goal: to make plants, crops and grass grow better. They produce high quality, potent fertilizers and ensure a controlled emission of the fertilizer itself. These fertilizers are supplied to high-quality brands that are known by growers to produce the best yield possible.

A team of dedicated technical experts at ICL ensures that the fertilization plan fits together seamlessly with the production system and the nutritional needs of the crops.

The lasting partnership with TBR and the sharing of knowledge has resulted in saving 190 tons of CO2 per year, or 25 households. The CO2 emissions per household are about 7.5 tons. ICL is aware of CO2 emissions and wants to minimize them. With the economizer we will increase the efficiency of the steam boiler.

Engineering

Steam is needed to produce these high-quality fertilizers. High-pressure equipment that falls under the Stoomwezen quality mark is used, equipment that TBR is well versed in. TBR carries out the annual maintenance and inspection. We replace, among other things, the electrodes, looking glass and gaskets. We prep the boiler for inspection and take care of maintenance on the drain, burner and control cabinet.

The economizer can be seen as a heat exchanger that absorbs heat from the flue gas. This heat is added to the water used to feed the steam boiler: a heat exchanger. This is how you extract energy from the flue gases. It increases the efficiency of the boiler by 5%.
